There is a difference between planting a seed and moving the needle during a time of transition: one is the formation of an idea, and the other is the action that carries it forward.

Both are beneficial for growth. We need seeds to start the process, and needles to be able to measure its development. We need both contemplation and proactive steps.

Let’s take “Pat” as an example of a client who is trying to determine how to move forward with a career change. In making this decision, she contemplates many ideas.

What are the seeds she is planting around this transition? Some might include thinking about other fields besides her own, hearing about opportunities from friends or colleagues, or examining positions she might be able to explore. This is her mental preparation and process of laying the groundwork for the changes she wants to make.

When Pat is ready, she begins to move the needle in her transition. She decides to design an action plan with dates, steps, and goals that she actively follows. With intention, she evaluates progress and processes obstacles. She is ready to measure the growth she makes.

At this point, Pat is content in working through her process. However, what happens if Pat wants a partner to brainstorm more seeds, or feels unsure as to how to move from seed to needle? She is filled with wonderful ideas and enthusiasm yet wants to search further. Or, maybe she feels confused with what to accomplish first. Things might feel like they are in limbo to her, with many creative ideas afloat, but none having focus. These scenarios present a perfect time to seek coaching support.

Rather than remain stuck feeling as though her feet are planted in the mud, she could partner with a professional coach who could offer her continued inspiration to plant more seeds, process blocks, and celebrate the ideas and action steps along the way that help move the needle.
