Language Matters

I recently heard a woman mentioning a new phase in her life, a move, as “daunting,” “worrisome,” “nerve-wracking,” and “difficult.”

I heard her statements that reflected her truths.

I heard her comments that predicted her future.

I heard her expression of sadness.

I heard all her words. But I’m not sure she heard them.

When we speak, the language we use projects the thoughts we have. Our words are powerful and influential. Our entire mood, our perspective, and our actions are affected by our words.

If I had the opportunity to coach this woman, I would point out the words I heard. I would help her see that what she thinks is what she projects.

I would invite her to look at her intentions, goals, and fears through her use of language.

And I would slowly help her create a new language that would serve her more and help her speak her wishes into reality.

Language matters.
